KCB Bank Kenya Review (2026): The Country's Biggest Bank by Assets
KCB Bank Kenya review (2026): the country's biggest bank by assets
If Equity is Kenya's biggest bank by customers, KCB is its biggest by assets — over KSh 1.8 trillion of them, a branch network north of 200, more than 2,000 ATMs, and a roughly 38% Government of Kenya shareholding that gives it a particular weight in the market.
It is, in the plainest terms, the institutional heavyweight. This review covers what that buys you, where KCB is merely ordinary, and who should actually choose it.
What KCB is
A full-service bank with the deepest balance sheet in the country: retail and business banking, the widest physical footprint, a solid app and USSD service on *522#, and — through its Safaricom partnership — KCB M-Pesa, one of the two dominant phone-native bank-loan products alongside M-Shwari.
KCB M-Pesa: the product most people actually want
For a lot of Kenyans, KCB M-Pesa is KCB. It deserves its own section because it occupies a genuinely useful middle ground that neither an overdraft nor an app loan covers.
- Amounts: from as little as KSh 50 up to around KSh 250,000 — a much higher ceiling than most instant products.
- Term: 7 to 90 days, which is the real differentiator. Fuliza charges a daily fee and wants clearing immediately; app lenders price for days. KCB M-Pesa lets you take a defined term and plan around it.
- Cost: the published pattern is around 9.06% per 30 days. Confirm the current facility fee before borrowing — this has been revised over time.
- Access: dial *522# on a Safaricom line; funds land in your M-Pesa.
A worked comparison makes the positioning clear. Borrowing KSh 20,000 for 30 days at that rate costs roughly KSh 1,800. That's more than a SACCO or the Hustler Fund would charge — and considerably less than rolling an app loan or carrying a Fuliza balance for a month. It is a bridge product priced like a bank, which is exactly what it should be.
Like every licensed lender, KCB reports to the credit bureaus, so on-time repayment builds your file and default damages it. See how to check your credit score.
The rest of the range
- Personal and salary loans. If your salary is paid into KCB, a check-off loan is dramatically cheaper per shilling than any instant product. This is the single most under-used option among people who default to app credit.
- Mortgages. KCB runs a dedicated mortgage operation and is one of the more active home lenders in a market where mortgage penetration is famously low. Model the repayment with our home loan calculator before you talk to anyone, and remember stamp duty is 4% in urban areas on top of the purchase price.
- SME, asset and agribusiness finance. A full commercial range, with the balance-sheet depth to write large facilities.
- Accounts. Standard current and savings accounts, plus foreign-currency options. As with every Kenyan bank, confirm the current tariff — the headline account is rarely where the cost lives.
How your KCB M-Pesa limit is set — and why it moves
The limit isn't arbitrary, and understanding it is worth real money.
It's built from your M-Pesa transaction history and your repayment record. Consistent activity on the line — money coming in, bills paid, balances that don't sit at zero — gives the model something to score. A dormant line gives it nothing, which is the most common reason a new user sees a disappointing figure.
Three things reliably lift it: borrowing modestly and repaying before the due date, using the M-Pesa line as your genuine primary wallet, and saving into KCB M-Pesa's savings side rather than only borrowing from it. Two things reliably shrink it: repaying late, and carrying a balance to the last possible day every time.
If your limit drops without explanation, it's almost always the second list.
Banking from abroad
KCB runs diaspora services for Kenyans overseas — shilling and foreign-currency accounts you can operate remotely, which matters if you're sending money home, servicing a mortgage, or building savings in Kenya while living elsewhere.
The account is only half the equation, though. What you lose to the transfer each month usually dwarfs anything the account costs: the exchange-rate margin on a remittance service is where the real money goes. Before setting up a monthly transfer, read sending money to Kenya and compare providers on our money transfer comparison — the difference between the best and worst option on a regular transfer compounds into serious money over a year.
Where KCB is ordinary
Everyday fees are bank-standard. Nothing about KCB's transaction charges beats the phone-native options for small, frequent movements. Read the tariff lines that match your actual behaviour — particularly bank-to-M-Pesa transfers, which is where most people's money quietly leaks.
Savings rates won't grow anything. A KCB savings account is a safe place to hold money, not a way to build wealth. A money market fund typically pays several times more for money you can still access within days — see where to save and invest in Kenya.
Big-bank service. Scale brings branch queues and call-centre waits at peak times. It's the standard trade-off for a network this size.
KCB M-Pesa isn't cheap credit. It's reasonably priced credit that arrives instantly. Those are different things, and confusing them is expensive.
KCB vs Equity vs Co-op
All three are CBK-licensed, KDIC-insured and genuinely capable. The honest differentiators:
| Strongest at | Choose it if | |
|---|---|---|
| KCB | Scale, stability, mortgages, flexible-term mobile loans | You want the deepest balance sheet, or KCB M-Pesa's 7–90 day terms |
| Equity | Reach — 50,000+ agents — and digital features | You're outside the big towns, or want the strongest app suite |
| Co-op | The SACCO relationship (600+ FOSA links) | You're a SACCO member |
None is clearly best. Pick on the charges and features that apply to how you bank, and compare them side by side on our bank accounts comparison.
Who KCB suits
- People who want a large, stable, government-linked bank for salary, savings and a mortgage.
- Anyone who values KCB M-Pesa's flexible term as a middle ground between an overdraft and an app loan.
- Businesses needing the full SME and asset-finance range with branch support.
- Borrowers with a KCB-paid salary, where check-off lending is the cheapest mainstream credit they can get.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone chasing the lowest transaction costs on small amounts, or the best return on savings. Those live with mobile-money-first setups and money market funds respectively.
How to open an account
Take your national ID and KRA PIN to a branch, or start in the KCB app. Business accounts need registration documents (BRS certificate, KRA PIN) — see the borrowing guide for what lenders expect from a formal business.
The verdict
KCB is the institutional heavyweight: deep, stable, complete, and the operator of a genuinely well-positioned mobile-loan product. It rarely leads on everyday cost, so choose it for solidity, range and the 7–90 day flexibility of KCB M-Pesa rather than for beating the phone-native players on fees.
For most people the honest move is to compare KCB and Equity head-to-head on the specific charges that apply to how they actually use a bank — and to keep serious savings somewhere that pays more than either.

Frequently asked questions
Is KCB safe? Yes — it's licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, and deposits are KDIC-protected up to KSh 500,000 per depositor. See how KDIC works.
How do I get a KCB M-Pesa loan? Dial *522# on a Safaricom line and follow the menu. Your limit is set from your usage and repayment history, and funds go straight to your M-Pesa wallet.
How much does a KCB M-Pesa loan cost? The published pattern is around 9.06% per 30 days, with terms from 7 to 90 days. Confirm the current facility fee in the menu before accepting — read the total repayable, not the rate.
KCB M-Pesa or M-Shwari? M-Shwari charges a one-off facility fee and suits a single short loan; KCB M-Pesa offers larger amounts and a defined 7–90 day term. For anything you'll repay over weeks rather than days, KCB M-Pesa's structure is usually easier to plan around.
KCB or Equity? KCB is bigger by assets and government-linked; Equity has more customers and a far larger agent network. Both are strong — compare the specific charges for your usage on our bank comparison.
Does KCB do mortgages? Yes — it runs a dedicated mortgage operation and is among the more active home lenders in Kenya. Model the repayment first with our home loan calculator.
Why did my KCB M-Pesa limit go down? Limits track behaviour. Repaying late, or consistently carrying a balance to the final day, shrinks them; borrowing modestly and repaying early lifts them. A dormant M-Pesa line also gives the model little to score.
Is a KCB salary loan cheaper than KCB M-Pesa? Almost always, yes. If your salary is paid into KCB, a check-off loan is priced far below any instant mobile product — it's the most under-used cheap credit available to salaried Kenyans. It just requires applying ahead of time rather than at the moment of need.
Can I open a KCB account from abroad? Yes — KCB runs diaspora services with shilling and foreign-currency accounts that can be operated remotely. Compare transfer costs separately; that's where diaspora money is usually lost.
